National Careers in Trades Week, April 6–10

The SMACNA Circuit,

SMCA is proud to recognize National Careers in Trades Week, taking place April 6–10, 2026. The initiative, led by SMACNA in partnership with SMART, ITI, MCAA, SMOHIT, NEMI, NECA, and HMSE, aims to raise awareness about the strong career opportunities available in the skilled trades.

Across the Philadelphia region, sheet metal and HVAC professionals play a critical role in building and maintaining the facilities our communities rely on every day, from schools and hospitals to data centers and commercial buildings. As demand for skilled workers continues to grow, attracting the next generation into the trades has never been more important.

Local contractors are already taking action to build that pipeline.

Ernie Menold of Ernest D. Menold, Inc. highlighted the importance of shifting perceptions and creating real exposure for young people:

“The trades have long been viewed as a backup plan, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Today, they offer a wide range of career paths where young people can earn a great living, avoid debt, and advance quickly. As the industry continues to evolve with technology, we need the next generation to help move it forward in the digital age.

Many young people never consider the trades simply because they haven’t seen them up close. Programs like the Heavy Metal Summer Experience give them that opportunity. They can build something with their own hands, see the technology behind it, and understand what a career in the trades really looks like. Sheet metal work, in particular, is one of the most diverse and dynamic trades, combining technical skill, creativity, and problem-solving in ways that surprise a lot of people.”

This summer, Ernest D. Menold, Inc. will host a Heavy Metal Summer Experience program in the Philadelphia area, giving young people hands-on exposure to the sheet metal trade and the technology that powers it.

Careers in the sheet metal industry offer competitive wages, strong benefits, paid apprenticeship training, and long-term advancement opportunities, all without the burden of student debt. Programs like these help ensure that the next generation is aware of and prepared for these opportunities.

SMCA encourages members and partners to help share the message during National Careers in Trades Week and continue supporting efforts to build a strong, skilled workforce for the future.
